Taking care of the battery and wire connections of your Electric Bicycle
Maintaining an electric cycle is no different than taking care of a regular bicycle. The two key components that need to be routinely checked and serviced are the battery and the motor.
The general misconception in India is that an electric bike is high maintenance. This may be true for the cheaper electric cycles on the market. The components of cheaper e-bikes are more subjected to wear and tear, and perform lower than somewhat higher priced branded electric cycles. Branded electric cycles are high performing and they require very less maintenance. Since each of the components of these bikes are of better quality better and durable, there are lesser chances of breakdown. This reduces frequent need for paid repair services. In the long run this saves money and you can really depend on the electric cycle to take to your destination daily. Ofcourse, it is advisable to take good care of the electric bike by regularly cleaning it and following certain rules.
Take care of it like you would take of yourself and it will take care of you for the years to come.
Look after it like you look after any other investments.
Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Read the manual for general maintenance and in case of a problem, lookup the Troubleshooting section at the end of the manual. Sometimes, it may be something very minor, which we could have overlooked!
Most Important Routine Maintenance Tasks
- When cleaning, always remove the battery.
- When you are mounting the cycle on a car rack, separate the battery from the cycle. You’ll have more room to secure the bike to the rack and the battery will be shielded from the heat, cold, and rain.
- It is best to remove your bicycle from the bicycle (deport) and store it at about 60% battery capacity and free from moisture.
- If your bicycle is left unused for an extended period of time due to unforeseen circumstances.
- The batteries also need to be charged at least once every two months, which is another factor to take into account.
- Battery life is increased by using lower assist levels when riding.
- Charge your device in complete cycles.
- Maintain tyre pressure between 40 and 50 psi to get the longest battery life.
- Planning your daily commute will help you determine how much battery power you will need. This guarantees a smooth ride without wasting extra money when higher levels of assistance are not actually necessary.
- Avoid “tinkering” with it and attempting to repair it yourself by removing any parts because doing so could damage the internals and void warranties. Instead, have an eBike technician handle the repair. You might unintentionally forget some crucial small parts.
- Do a preliminary check before rushing to the dealer to make sure all the parts are in place and have not moved, such as the battery or the wires, which may have disconnected and lost connection.
- Give your electric bicycle a 10 minute break by turning it off. Sometimes all thats needed to reboot is switching off for a few minutes before again turning it on. In case the electric motor does not turn on after that, show it to the dealer or service center.
- Keep the electric cycle away from water. Like any other electronic device, it is always advisable to avoid bringing the electric cycle into direct contact water. The IP-65 water resistant components many not hold up in case the bike is from a very good brand as recommended in our blog Homepage at www.ecyclesindia.in
- The motor should be serviced regularly.
- Its important to keep the electric bicylce’s chain lubricated in order to ensure smooth and efficient operation. Remember to use only recommended and good quality lubricant.
Precautions to take after riding your electric bicycle in the rains:
- After your ride, wipe down and dry your battery with a dry towel.
- To prevent corrosion, grease the electrical contacts on your electric cycle with a di-electric grease.
- Prior to lubricating, dry and clean the chain links with a dry cloth.
- Dry and cover the entire cycle, including the LED display, as it is the most sensitive and important part of the electric cycle. It would not be possible to know the battery charging levels and also change riding modes.
